AquaPath App Reviews
Yes, its possible to execute XPath queries, but thats almost all. You cant load/import files, there is no quick navigation to results (or reduce the view to them), no export options, no options to save queries, no query history, no help.
What about some convenience features? I would pay 1-3 bucks more for the app if it had more features. One example: Right now I have to copy the contens of an XML file into the editor area. Importing from XML could be offered as a menu item. Another one would be to provide a filtered view that displays only the elements that match the XPath expression. With large XML files it is very tedious to do all the scrolling.
This app doesnt work and should not be in the app store. If this was software I bought from a regular store, Id return it, but it looks like Apple doesnt support that. It doesnt even work with simple XML. There is no syntax highlighting contrary to the screenshots...
A GUI equivalent of the xpath command line tool, worth $2 despite drawbacks. This is clearly a simple tool built by the author for his specific purpose, without much effort to make it apply to others purpose. However, you can not directly open an XML file with an arbitrary extension from within the app. If you try to open it using the menu, it warns you that it cant. If you try to drag the file into the source pane, you get the path of the file inserted into the source pane instead of the content of your file. That said, once you get the XML in (drag the contents of the file over from TextWrangler, copy-paste, whatever), itll run xpath queries on it and show the results. Im not sorry I spent $2 on this, though Id rather have spent $20 on a more polished tool. :)
It’s not working with invalid DOM. For example, if DOM has a non closed tag, this app will be shows an error message until you do fix it. Most popular tools for DOM can skip similar errors if you want it. I think author must fix it… wasted money :(
too bad
just not work for me with valid xml file. want money back
Piece of junk
Wont open/load/parse/query any of my xml files (which libxml2 will load/parse/query just fine). Worthless.
What a piece of junk! It wouldnt open any of my xml files. Heck it wouldnt open ANY files. All files appear disabled in the file chooser! I even tried to copy and paste xml in the source window but when I try to evaluate an expression, the things just beeps and does nothing else even for expressions I know are valid. Dont buy it. Smells like a scam. If you dont believe me, try to look for any support info in the about box. There you will find helpful contact information such as -- Engineering: Some people Human Interface Design: Some other people Testing: Hopefully not nobody Documentation: Whoever With special thanks to: Mom
This app is quite simple and focused, and it works well for evaluating XPath expressions against XML. Its great for extracting information from a document without having to use XSLT, or just to navigate through a document. However, I cant give it more stars due to one annoying problem: you cant just open an XML document, you have to paste the contents into the "source" tab. PLEASE change it so there is an option to open and save as XML, rather than opening or saving as an Aqua Path document. Thanks for making it and I look forward to updates.
Its workable, but sorely missing a few things. The first is really a deal-breaker for anything beyond small snippets. 1) Auto-scroll to the first found result 2) Option to disable sound effects 3) Drag & drop of files (currently have to paste content in) 4) auto-formatting of content
I saw all those negative reviews of not being able to open XML files and thought to myself: its a risk but Im gonna take it anyway. I downloaded it and it couldnt open XML!!! So I thought, cr*p, I just spent money on something that I cant use and I shouldve listened. I sent Todd, the awesome developer of this wonderful app, an email; meanwhile I tried to figure out how to use it. It turned out that you have to copy and paste the XML in so it can save it as an .aquapath file, which the app can open. Having solved my problem and thinking that I will not likely to get a reply from Todd, I just moved on to the next thing on my to-do. But no! Todd actually replied within hours! Aside from this subtlety, everything works in perfect harmony. Buy this app if you need it. It works.
Its Okay
It would be nice if the app scrolled to where in the xml file it found the query. Would also be nice if it supported HTML.
Yes, it does show the results of my XPath queries, but all it really does for me is highlight the matching entries which in a big document is not very useful. Honestly I could just run XPath on the command line and get more useful output, so why did I pay for this? So its a good start, but needs better viewing features. What would make this a killer app for XPath, IMO, is some combination of the following, in order of importance: * At the least, a left-hand "match here" highlight as is done in any modern browser, that allows the user to see the location matches across the length of the document by looking at the scroll bar * As a better option, a "results" overview panel (maybe across the bottom) when executing a query, which can show the matching elements in real time and jump to them by clicking, and more importantly, save the results to an output file! * Direct opening of XML files from the File menu * Opening multiple files in/below a directory (e.g. a whole source tree with lots of XMLs, which I frequently need) * A "find/find next" option inside of or instead of the "results" panel, especially when opening multiple files If the above were implemented, not only would this app be much more useful, but Id be willing to pay more for it, too!
I have found this program to be a perfect companion to the OReilly "XSLT Cookbook" by Sal Mangano. The ability to test expressions on the fly really helps sink the recipes in that book. As other reviewers too have noted, however, the program could use some improvement—I have in mind specifically the option to turn off the sound effects, and to open XML source files.
I works okay if all you care is the XPath match count. I have a giant file, it is very slow to evaluate. Thats okay, but when it finally tells you there are X number of sequences matched, itll not bring you to there. You have to scoll through the giant file to locate where the match is.
All I got for my $1.99 was that chance to leave this bad review! The only thing that passes for support is snotty email from the developer. Save you money and dont by anything from this jerk...
how in the hell could someone load an xml in this program? the open file does not take xml and copy and paste does not work.. no help files? why would the developer charge 1 usd for this?..
I looked at the screenshot, glanced at the low price, and hit buy. Seemed like it was going to be awesome. The first thing I do is try to open an xml file. And I cant. A sinking feeling washes over me as I go back and read the many negative reviews regarding this extremely basic missing feature. Sure. The description doesnt *say* you can open xml files. But come on. It *does* say "rudimentary text editor". The only way to use this app is to open your xml file in a different program and manually copy it into this program. This is so frustrating that I didnt even bother using the xpath features. Im surprised Apple approved this app.
AquaPath has no Preference options whatsoever. Its unalterable defaults include minuscule type and a beep after every run. Its unable to open an XML document, instead requiring copy/paste.
This app has already saved me many, many hours of boring, boring busywork. Best $1.99 I’ve spent in a long time! Could use some features, as others have noted. Opening XML files directly is one, and I’d like to see the XPath expression field as a drop-down with history.
